Every day, millions of people log on to Twitter and other social media sites to hear the latest from family, friends, and business they follow. That’s why more chiropractors are taking advantage of this excellent opportunity to reach out to the public.

Chiropractors can use Twitter to update patients about current news, services, and healthcare tips. Within seconds, patients can find out what’s important in your chiropractic practice. With these regular updates, you can ensure that you stay relevant to the lives of your patients. They will come to view you as a reliable, accessible source of healthcare information.

We encourage you to update your Twitter account on a weekly if not daily basis. This consistent interaction with patients will help develop loyalty in your chiropractic practice.

I have a confession to make.

It’s embarrassing, but I’ve decided to come clean and admit… that I’m addicted to Twitter.

Judge me if you must. A bunch of my old blog articles make fun of Twitter, but I’ll gladly admit that I was wrong!

My problem was that I just couldn’t figure out how to consistently monetize Twitter. Online advertising is straightforward, search engine optimization is obvious, and even Facebook marketing is fairly quantifiable — but Twitter eluded me until this week.

Wanna know the secret? Here it is: stop thinking about immediate returns.

Your goal on Twitter is to build genuine relationships. The platform makes it easy to engage in lots of meaningful conversations simultaneously and rapidly expand your network. Successful Twitter campaigns are genuine, personal, and consistent.

Here’s the catch. It can’t be automated, it stinks as an advertising platform, and traditional marketing approaches don’t work.

Your goal isn’t to directly convert other Twitter users into clients, so forget about posting “special offers”.

Want to succeed? Build relationships with important people in your community, take part in conversations, periodically talk about your profession, educate people, and forget about immediate returns.

If you need immediate return-on-investment I recommend advertising. Social media isn’t about instant gratification, it’s about being a valuable member of your community and building long term name recognition and respect.

Is Twitter right for you? I think that depends entirely on your goals, the size of your city, and how much time you’re willing to invest.

All I can say is — I was wrong, Twitter is an incredible communication platform, and I’m glad I joined the community.

It haunts us. It torments us. We can’t escape it!

Spam.

Not the canned food substitute – the unsolicited advertising. Every day, millions of innocent web users innocently open their emails, only to be swarmed by scams, viagra, and Nigerian bankers. Promises of wealth, cures, and inappropriate personal ads have become as common on the internet as sand on a beach. Fortunately, email providers like Gmail have gotten pretty darn good at filtering out the daily assaults of junk mail.

Unfortunately, however, spammers are now following us to social media sites like Facebook and Twitter! Our chimpanzee lab is working on a prototype “spam-a-ray”. For the time being, it looks like a stick. In lieu of a magical spam-away weapon, I suggest ignoring the junk and minimizing our own contributions to global spamming.

It’s all too easy to jump on a site like Facebook and begin barraging the masses with “special offers” and “excellent services”. Please don’t. Social media websites are communities, not billboards. You’ll do yourself and everyone else a favor if you stick to providing valuable information and creating personal connections. Personally, I recommend starting a chiropractic blog and posting witty, fun, and informative articles frequently, then sharing them with your friends one on Facebook and Twitter. This strategy works especially well if you host the blog on your website because it’ll draw a steady stream of traffic.

Here's a new article outlining the three most important components of successful online marketing: Community, Education, and Value. Written by Roderick Campbell, Chirohosting's Marketing Director.

In this article, I’ll outline the three most valuable aspects of online marketing and then I’ll give you advice on how to utilize them. Consumers are looking for these three things:

Community

Education

Value

Without any of these components, you won’t be successful online. Let’s break them down:

Community:

Amazon.com’s success was due to one feature: community involvement. This simple function launched Amazon into a multi-billion dollar company. Why? Because it fulfilled a primal human need. Amazon didn’t create a webstore, it created a community of active participants who find value not only in products, but also in each other. Effectively, Amazon encouraged their customers to evangelize each other about their great products.

Education:

You can have the best product in the world but if nobody knows about it- it won’t sell. You have two options: waste thousands of dollars on broad advertising OR invest in engaging and educating a small community. I recommend the second option. Why? Education is a valuable resource – people will become rabidly loyal if you provide it for them.

Value:

Today, no matter what industry you’re in, there are typically dozens of people providing the same service. You need to distinguish yourself; special offers, one-time deals, and flashy advertising won’t cut it. It’s imperative that you provide something that your competition doesn’t.

Solutions:

Blog – And blog often! Every time you run across an interesting article or piece of information, share it! Don’t get caught up on perfect grammar or eloquence, just write. If you take five minutes a day to write a quick article – you’ll have a vast library of information for your patients within a few months. Pretty soon your blog will draw its own traffic and your patients will recommend it to their friends. Your credibility will explode, your patients will appreciate your service, and your writing will even improve! (P.S. allow commentary, people will ask questions and create a mini-community)

Facebook – It gives your business a face, lets you publish new content within seconds, is remarkably easy to set-up, and gives you access to over 100 million people. It takes no time at all for you to develop a loyal base of several hundred followers, each of whom has the potential to refer dozens of people to your practice. Best of all, it’s free! Here’s some advice: don’t just add friends and post advertisements. Take the time to say hello to people and thank them for adding you as a friend. It’s amazing how much goodwill this generates and how rapidly it attracts patients.

Twitter – I recommend investing in a smartphone. They’re easy to use and they make social media marketing remarkably easy. If you combine a smartphone with Twitter, you can update your social media content from anywhere- except the movie theatre or your anniversary dinner. This application is easy to use and can dramatically amplify your marketing success. Twitter is also free! (P.S. don’t spam. “Stop by for a free adjustment today” is okay…just don’t post it every day, that’s annoying)

Interactive Websites – Consider adding an “ask the doctor” function to your website. This allows potential patients to send you quick questions and gives you the opportunity to give recommendations, schedule an evaluation, and begin a conversation. We’ve just added this feature to our new websites and it works incredibly well!

Hopefully this article was helpful. If you have any questions about social media, send me an email at Rod@Chirohosting.com or give us a call at 1(800)295-3346. I’m always happy to answer questions or help you strategize.
