The power of "QR Codes" and how they can impact your practice

March 22, 2011

We've all seen them. Some of us know what they are, while others just ignore them without knowledge of their function. We see them on insurance checks, promotional items, grocery store items, coupons, and in magazines and newspapers across the globe. What on earth am I referring to? Those small little black boxes with an encrypted looking jumbled up pattern of black ink blotches known as a "QR Code."( You don't say doc? Well how can QR Codes help my practice?? I'm glad you asked....

As a chiropractor in Tulsa, I'm bombarded daily with "the next greatest promise on how to get patients into your door" pitches. These pitches usually cost a ton without any proven benefits. I'm a believer in utilizing technology to lower my overall marketing expenditures and have found them to cost a fraction of what these "worry free, promise the world" campaigns cost. I've worked hard building my online presence so patients can find me, as well as a Facebook page to interact with my patients. The latter two examples cost me a whopping ZERO dollars/mo. In fact, if I were to share my total monthly advertising expenditure with you, you'd be in shock to find out how low it is. So we get it doc, you spend hardly anything promoting your office, so tell us about these QR codes....

I decided to overhaul my logo, website, and business card last year. In reinventing my business card, I made a customized QR Code to place on back of my card. I linked the code to my website and online business listing. Have you ever had to explain directions to someone? Ever told them your website address? Well listen, this is how easy it is. "Hello Mr. Smith, My name is Dr. Snyder, it's a pleasure to meet you. Here is my business card, please note on the back is a "bar code" of sorts. If you have a smart phone with a camera (who doesn't) and would like more information about my office, just pick up your phone and scan that code." That's how easy it's been.

But that's not all (I feel like this is an infomercial.) What I experienced next was a pleasant surprise and real eye-opener. Mr. Smith was very impressed with my use of this simple technology that he began showing my business card to his circle of friends, it quickly took on a life of it's own. Guess how much that cost me? Less than $50 for thousands of cards. Best thing about it is now when I see others I've handed a card to, they ask me for more cards so they can hand them out to their friends.
