How do I improve my Google search ranking?

October 22, 2018

Let's face it: if you're building a website for your chiropractic office, you're probably not doing it for fun. You're building a site because you want to get new patients. People in your city need to first find your website and then your website needs to persuade people to call you for an appointment.

We cover the keys to successful chiropractic marketing here, but in this article, we're going to discuss the most common question we hear from doctors:

How do I get my chiropractic practice to be #1 in Google search?

Being #1 in the search results is every doctor's goal. The number one position has two key benefits:

  • The higher you appear in the search rankings, the more traffic you'll get to your site. The number one position gets between 20 - 30% of all clicks. #2 & #3 get about 12% each. That means that roughly half of all web search traffic is going through the first three listings in a search.
  • Your potential patients assume that if you're higher up in the search rankings, you have more credibility. There's some truth to this, as positive reviews are one of the many ranking factors that Google uses to position local businesses in their algorithm. If you have a number of five star reviews, you'll rank better and have better search engine placement.

Most of the chiropractors we talk to are in cities or suburbs and they're competing with other doctors for good search ranking. Everyone wants to have the #1 position, and that makes your job much more difficult. Only one website can be #1, after all.

And the competition can be fierce. With over 60,000 chiropractors in the United States, you're most likely competing with dozens of colleagues. If you want to get (and keep) good search ranking, it's going to take some work.

We've been helping chiropractors improve their search ranking since the early days of the web (we built our first chiropractic site in 2000, 18 years ago), and we've got years of data that show us the factors that Google uses to rank sites. Here are some of the key ways to start improving your search engine ranking:

Improve Your Website

Make sure that your site is fast, includes SSL, and is configured for local search.

Google My Business

Local search is critical for your marketing success, and Google My Business is the key to this. Google uses the information on your My Business profile to determine your location and business category.

Citation Building and NAP clean-up

This is related to your Google My Business account, and it helps Google determine your office's credibility. Citations, or directory listings, help your rank better and help patients find your practice online.

Patient Reviews

The more positive reviews you have from real patients, the higher your search ranking will be. Google wants to send patients to the best businesses, and reviews are one of the key ways that's determined by the Google algorithm.

Site Content

You need to have articles and blog posts on your site that are keyword-optimized for the words and phrases your patients are searching for.

Backlinks

Link building is an important part of your online marketing, and it's a unique challenge for local businesses.
